Two Galway county councillors are still in the running for a seat in the Seanad, as the first of the panel counts continues.

Ballinasloe councillor Michael Mullins and Connemara councillor Seamus Walsh are still on the ticket for a seat by election on the cultural and educational panel.

The counting of votes for election on this panel got underway at Government buildings in Dublin around 2pm, with final results expected by 10 o clock this evening.

Fine Gael Dublin Councillor Jim O'Dea has already been eliminated after the first count at the Seanad elections.

Over the next three days, counting of votes for the NUI constituency and the remaining four panels will take place and Galway's 10 other candidates will know their fate at that stage.
