Gardai, Rescue 115 helicopters and local volunteers were all involved in the search

A missing person search along one Galway area was stood down after an operation was carried out by gardai and emergency services.

Rescue 115 helicopters alongside Galway Civil Defence and local gardai searched parts of Portumna and Loughrea after the alarm was raised about a missing person.

Three 4x4 vehicles and two drone teams were deployed alongside local volunteers who wanted to help out but the search was stood down shortly before 6am after no discovery was made.

A spokesperson for Rescue 115 said: “Rescue 115 returned safely back to Shannon at 6am after tasking to an area north east of Portumna for a search. Tasked along with Galway Civil Defence and their Drone Unit, a full search was completed by Rescue 115 and with nothing to report, the helicopter was stood down and told return to base in Shannon.”

Elsewhere, a stretch of a Galway motorway road has reopened after emergency services dealt with an early morning incident.

Long lines of traffic built up on the M6 across the morning following what is understood to be a single vehicle collision westbound between the Galway Plaza and the toll in Loughrea with drivers being warned to avoid if possible.

It’s understood that three ambulances and two garda squad cars attended the scene but Galway Live understands that nobody has been seriously injured.

A garda spokesman told Galway Live: “Gardaí and emergency services attended a road traffic collision that occurred near Ballinasloe, Co. Galway today Monday 2nd November 2026 shortly before 6:40am. The road is open to traffic.”

As well as this, one person has been airlifted to University Hospital Galway after a very serious accident over the weekend.

The incident happened in the small rural village of Drimghlea in the area of Ballyconneely on Saturday evening just after 4pm.

A source told Galway Live: “There was a very bad accident there on Saturday evening. It was a two car collision and the helicopter had to come out to bring one of the people to the hospital.”
