Priest forced to cancel Galway mass over 'church infestation'

It also happened to coincide with his silver jubilee milestone of joining the priesthood but that did not stop celebrations from taking place
A local Galway parish priest could not bee-lieve his bad luck when he was forced to cancel mass for one of the most bizarre reasons on the same weekend as a massive milestone for him.
Father Douglas Zaggi, who also happened to be celebrating 25 years in the priesthood the very same weekend, should have been on a hive high but instead had to forgo Sunday mass due to a bee and wasp infestation at Toghergar Church near Ruane in Ballygar with a local alert sent out warning parishioners.
While the infestation may have caused a small sting to celebrations, there was still a busy buzz around his incredible silver jubilee.
Peter Daly, who runs the local Ballygar Banter page, said the wonderful occasion “showed the true Meitheal” of the community.
He said: “Congratulations to Fr Douglas on celebrating 25 years in the priesthood. An incredible milestone. Last night, our community joined Fr Douglas, Bishop Kevin Doran and many brother priests from around the country and Nigeria for a Mass of Thanksgiving, in St Mary's Church Ballygar.
“This was followed by a wonderful reception and presentation to Fr Douglas in The Mattie McDonagh Centre. Many warm and richly deserved tributes were paid to our much loved Parish Priest. Traditional music, song and dance by some great local talent entertained the large attendance.
“MC for the evening, Jim Brogan did an excellent job, while Mattie Kinsley spoke on behalf of the pastoral council, congratulating Fr Douglas and thanking him for all he has done and continues to do for evryone in our community.
“Fr Douglas responded with some beautiful words and launched his trilogy of books, The Living Word, a series of reflections and sermons.
“Many thanks to everyone who was involved in creating such a memorable evening, decorating the Church, participating in the Mass, decorating the Mattie McDonagh Centre and providing the entertainment. Aidan Maloney and his team also played blinder providing delicious finger food and drinks for approximately 500 people in attendance.”
