GAA officials thought the banner was offensive

A lot has changed in four decades but throwing it back to 1987 and before Galway beat Kilkenny to get their claws on Liam MacCarthy again, there was controversy in the stands.

Two brothers had their banner banned and confiscated by the GAA during the September final nearly forty years ago.

RTE have shared a throwback to the interview with the siblings who explained that officials thought the banner was offensive.

The All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship between Galway and Limerick gets underway on Sunday afternoon at 3:30pm. Limerick are aiming to win the All-Ireland Senior Hurling Championship for the first time since 2023. Cork native Colm Lyons takes charge of the big game.

It is a repeat of the 2018 final where Limerick narrowly edged Galway 3-16 to 2-18. Micheal Donoghue’s charges arrive into the All-Ireland final on the back of winning the Leinster Championship with a 4-29 to 4-16 win over Dublin. The men in maroon and white followed that up with an impressive victory over Cork in the All-Ireland semi-final.

Limerick just did enough to get past Cork in the Munster final and the Shannonsiders needed a late goal from Aidan O’Connor to get past Clare in the All-Ireland semi-final.
