Scavenger hunt tests Galway city nous

A scavenger hunt through the streets of Galway marked the celebration of International Tourist Guide Day 2026 last Saturday.
Participants in the Galway Scavenger Hunt Tourist Trail were given a series of clues leading them to different locations around the city.
At each stop, a fully qualified Galway Tour Guide provided engaging insights into the site’s history, significance and relevance to Galway as a tourism destination, before issuing the next clue.
Six of the city's finest guides attached to the Galway Tour Guides Association (GTGA) took part, delivering six clues across six secret locations. The event was free to attend and is a follow-on from similar events in 2024 and 2025.
The tour began at St Nicholas’ Collegiate Church at 11am, led by Galway Tour Guide Brendan J Hynes, whose brainchild the hunt was.
The event concluded with addresses by Galway Town Crier, Liam Silke, Jim Ward, Chairperson of GTGA, and other GTGA members.
International Tourist Guide Day is celebrated in more than 70 countries worldwide and highlights the vital role guides play in heritage, culture and visitor experience. This year’s global theme is Sustainable Tourism.
As the city’s only genuine tour guiding association, GTGA is dedicated to delivering immersive and insightful experiences, showcasing Galway’s rich history, culture, and natural beauty.
This event highlights the essential role of local tour guides in shaping a welcoming and authentic visitor experience. By sharing their deep knowledge and passion, Galway’s guides play a key role in promoting the city and ensuring tourists leave with lasting memories.
