OVERCROWDING FORCES CANCELLATION OF UHG SURGERIES

Date Published: 19-Jan-2011
Management at University Hospital Galway has been forced to cancel elective surgeries again today [19/1] as they deal with patient overcrowding.
Staff are currently dealing with a full intensive care unit, and have to nurse some of these patients in the recovery area of the theatre.
There are also 36 patients waiting on trollies at UHG's A & E department.
High patient numbers attending the city hospital over the Winter season have put extreme pressure on patients and staff, resulting in longer waiting times, and the cancellation of routine and elective surgeries.
Management at the Bon Secours Hospital and the Galway Clinic have offered to provide accommodation for UHG patients if the need arises.
