All in all around 40 offences were detected by gardai over the eight-hour period they carried out the new Operation

Gardai swarmed several Galway areas over an eight-hour period on Monday as part of a new Operation Intercept.

The multi-agency search saw custom officials, sniffer dogs and local road safety officers across all areas of the county to catch out drivers breaking the law.

During the 8am to 4pm search, gardai were able to track down drug drivers while also seizing vehicles illegally on the road.

One driver was sniffed out by the garda dog on the N17 in Milltown and a follow-up search of the vehicle discovered €1,000 worth of cannabis inside.

The driver failed the roadside test and was arrested and brought to a garda station for further investigation.

A garda spokesman said: "At the N83 Headford, a second driver also tested positive for drug impaired driving and was arrested and processed. Prosecutions will follow with respect to both drivers for illegal drug possession and for drug impaired driving.

"Four vehicles were seized - two by Gardai for No Insurance/related offences, and two by customs officers for Marked Gas Oil & VRT related offences."

"28 technical offences were detected on 29 HGV’s that were stopped and controlled at checkpoints with prosecutions to follow. One HGV was also detected with an unregistered trailer."

"Five section 14 (1) notices were issued by immigration officers. There were multiple summary road traffic detections with prosecutions/FCNs to issue with respect to a False licence, Road Tax, CRW, NCT, unaccompanied driving, and other road traffic related offences."
