Investigation into deaths of GMIT students to be completed by end of summer

Galway Bay fm newsroom – The investigation into the fire that killed two GMIT students in Belgium earlier this year is expected to be completed by the end of summer. 19 year-old Sara Gibaldo from Oranmore and 22 year-old Dace Zarina from Longford died in a fire at a house in the university town of Leuven on Janurary 31st. Both of the women were second year students in the Bachelor of Business degree in hotel and catering management at GMIT and were on Erasmus placements at the time of the incident. According to today's Irish Times, Belgian police have handed over a file to state prosecutors in Leuven who are investigating the incident. It is understood ownership of the house is one issue being pursued – Belgian law requires student accommodation to be registered as such. GMIT has not sent students to the institute since the incident.
