City Council rolls out new maintenance stations for bikes, wheelchairs and prams

Bike maintenance stands installed as part of a trial to encourage more people to cycle have received positive feedback so far.

Two stands at Blackrock and Westside Library have proved successful since they were installed by Galway City Council as part of European Mobility Week in September.

The local authority has confirmed that at least two more stands are planned, including one in Eyre Square and at another yet-to-be announced location.

Each stand contains gadgets including tools and an air pump for cyclists to carry out repairs on their bicycles. They can also be used by wheelchair users or to repair punctures in equipment such as prams.

Councillor Eddie Hoare said the bike maintenance stands were good news for Galway cyclists.

“It’s a pilot being run over 18 months in conjunction with the National Transport Authority who are fully funding it. They are running it as a pilot to see how they work at different locations. How are they looked after, will they be used, and can they improve them before they roll them out on a more permanent basis and to other locations,” he said.

The stands have a pump, spanner, and screwdrivers securely connected to the stations and it’s understood the pilot will ascertain how secure they are, and whether they will be impacted by anti-social behaviour.

Cllr Hoare added: “They have been rolled-out in some European cities and have been successful and very well received. It is a small measure but there are other cycling infrastructure projects planned for Galway and these bike maintenance stands are another piece of the jigsaw to support cycling.”

Each bike maintenance station cost €1,245 plus VAT to install and they were fully funded by the NTA.

Galway Cycling Campaign described the pilot as “fantastic”.

“Small investments like these pumps and repair stands will make such a difference to people cycling around our lovely city,” the group said.

A number of other community groups said they hoped to see them rolled-out to other areas, including in County Galway such as Athenry and Oranmore.

The Council confirmed the trial began as part of European Mobility Week.

A Council spokesperson added: “Two stands are operational – at Blackrock and the Westside Library. A third will be installed in Eyre Square following the Christmas Market. A fourth location is also being considered.”
