Boston Mayor to visit Connemara routes in September

Galway Bay fm newsroom – It has now been confirmed that the Mayor of Boston, Marty Walsh will pay a ten day visit to Connemara and other parts of Ireland in September. Mayor Walsh, whose parents emigrated from Carna and Ros Muc had promised that his first visit outside of the United States would be to Connemara…and to his parent's home communities. The election of Marty Walsh as Mayor of Boston last November caused unbridled celebration among Connemara people – and Irish people in general – on both sides of the Atlantic. The Mayor's parents were 1950ies emigrants from the Connemara Gaeltacht; his late father John Walsh came from Callowfeenish in Carna and his mother, Mary – formerly O Malley – comes from Ros Cide in Ros Muc. Marty Walsh promised that his first official trip outside of the United States – if he were elected Mayor – would be to his parents home communities in Connemara. The Mayor comes to Ireland on the 20th of September. The people of Ros Muc and Carna will come together to welcome him…with all of Connemara joining in. In a historic and symbolic event, Mayor Walsh will also lay the first stone at the Emigrants Commemorative Centre site in Carna.
