The magnificent Dott, whose debut album Swoon was released by the American Graveface in 2013, will play a free show in Róisín Dubh  this Friday night, September 5.

“I just got an e-mail out of the blue from the label Graveface,” recalls lead-singer Anna McCarthy of the launch. “They said ‘hi, we can’t stop listening to the EP [Button, released in 2012] if you ever want to do anything let us know’.

“That was August last year. We’d only just released Button and we didn’t know what we were going to do next. He offered to put the EP out on seven-inch vinyl, and as soon we were deciding to record the album [label founder] Ryan said ‘can I put this out too?’.”

On the album, Anna recorded her vocal parts twice – a process called double-tracking, a technique used by The Beatles, Nirvana and the American singer Elliott Smith, whom Anna cites as inspiration.

Swoon is full of instantly hummable melodies, while Tony Higgins’ unpredictable drumming gives the record an added element of surprise.

“Tony has a really varied background, he’s played jazz and, I don’t know – everything!” He’s always trying to do something a bit different with his drums, he never likes to do the obvious with his drum line. And it seems to work – if it were simple beats the songs could be two-dimensional.”

This promises to be a special show.
