Tribeswomen have plenty of options ahead of championship opener against Kerry
GALWAY ladies football joint managers Fiona Wynne and Maghnus Breathnach will face a tough proposition this week as they prepare to name the 15 players who will start against Kerry in the opening round of the TG4 All Ireland Senior Championship.
This Galway outfit will travel to Birr on Saturday evening (throw in 7.15pm) as favourites after their highly impressive Connacht final win over Mayo a month ago.
Arguably the most pleasing aspect of the win was how Galway responded to shipping 1-3 without reply to see their comfortable lead slashed to two points. The winners kicked the final two points of the game, with Galway’s fresh legs off the bench made a telling impact.
Lynsey Noone slotted 1-1 while her sisters Hannah and Eva, Kate Slevin and Siobhán Divilly all made a telling impact as the fresh impetus provided by the substitutes helped to quell a gutsy Mayo challenge.
Wynne admits the management team are in a fortunate position to possess such a deep squad as the Pres Athenry teacher hailed the strength and depth within the panel.
“It’s the type of headache you want to have. If you don’t have that headache than perhaps you don’t have the strength in depth you thought you had. It’s a great problem but it’s very challenging. We’ve got full belief in all our players so it’s tough on the girls who don’t get to play.”
