ST Killian’s struck the final eight points as they overcame 14 man Clarin College to win the Connacht Post Primary Schools Senior C hurling Championship final.

With the New Inn school only leading by a point at the break, 1-5 to 1-4, Clarin College were left to rue Kian Flaherty’s sending off. The centre back was sent to the line just 20 seconds into the concluding half for a second bookable offence.

Flaherty can have few complaints with his second booking coming after a wild challenge on Oisín Finn as the St Killian’s captain threatened to slice through the Clarin College defence. His opening yellow card came when conceding a penalty in the 11th minute.

For the entirety of this game, St Killian’s’ Lewis Coughlan did a stellar man marking job on Clarin College dangerman Dylan Dunne. The Cappataggle hurler kept Dunne scoreless from play as he followed the Clarinbridge man throughout, both when he was located at centre forward and also while he was on the edge of the square.

St Killian’s won the second half 0-9 to 0-1 with Eoghan Connelly seeing a penalty flash over the bar for Clarin College early in the second half. The Athenry school lacked the necessary quality up front to carve their opponents open as Oisín Coyne’s goal in the 10th minute was their only score from play.

That green flag put them 1-2 to 0-2 up but this was the only time they led as St Killian’s, spurred by the concession of the goal, earned themselves a penalty with Darragh Donohue subsequently dispatching the sliotar to the net.
