THE GALWAY U20 footballers have continued their unbeaten start to the Connacht Championship. After missing out on qualifying for the knockout stages last year, Galway now look in a strong position to advance into the Connacht semi-finals.

The team that tops the group after the round-robin series will advance directly into the Connacht final, with second and third place meeting in the semi-final to see who advances to the decider.

Kevin Johnson’s side recorded a 2-11 to 0-11 victory over Leitrim in the Connacht GAA Centre of excellence on Wednesday evening. Goals from Matthew Collins and Ciaran Mulhern proved crucial for the Tribesmen.

“I think what’s really important for us is try to keep the game simple, we probably over complicated things at times, we tried to force things. For us, I think it’s a massive learning but I have to give credit to Leitrim aswell. I did a little bit of homework on them, they’ve six county senior panelists, for us to just get the win that’s the important thing,” said Galway U20 football manager Kevin Johnson

“The goals came at the right time, the goals last week came at the right time. You see, the thing about this tournament is it's so tight, there’s no bad team. You’re always saying no matter what people say about any team in Connacht everyone will give you a hard shot. The most important thing for us is to have four points and to really build on this now,” added Johnson.

Galway have a bye in round three and then host Sligo on April 8 in round four of the Connacht Championship followed by an away trip to Mayo in round five on April 15. Johnson has welcomed a two week break for his side.

Oranmore Maree’s Ciaran McDonagh remains the only injury concern for the Galway U20 footballers. McDonagh picked up a hamstring injury in a challenge match before the Connacht Championship.
