Pubs closed for flouting Covid regulations

Gardaí have warned that they will object to the renewal of pub licences if they continue to reopen without permission in advance of the official easing of Covid restrictions.

The warning follows confirmation that several pubs across the county have been closed by Gardaí for breaches over the past week. Some of those flouting the law even put menus on tables – despite not having facilities to serve food.

All of this comes as argument and counter-arguments continue over the planned reopening of pubs as part of the final phase in the easing of lockdown measures, which has been postponed to August 10.

The National Public Health Emergency Team has already made clear its serious concerns about moving into the fourth stage of the Government’s plan for reopening the country due to the increasing number of coronavirus cases.

Following on from last week’s incidents right across the county, Sergeant Daithi Cronin told the Connacht Tribune that those pubs who transgressed have been warned about their behaviour – and they were told they will face opposition when it comes to their applications for their renewal of their licences if they continue to breach the regulations.

At least two pubs in North Galway were cleared by Gardaí for serving drink without food; they were letting customers in through rear entrances.

Four pubs in one rural village in Galway were said to be serving customers without any food being provided.
