NUIG steps up drug patrols on campus

NUI Galway authorities have stepped up security patrols on the campus, following reports of heroin addicts openly using the drug.
The college is working closely with Gardaí in an effort to prevent drug use on the lands, where used hypodermic needles and other paraphernalia have been found.
There is an increased security presence and regular patrols of the campus.
Last week, the Galway City Tribune reported how members of the public were shocked to see heroin abusers openly ‘shooting up’ in broad daylight on a scenic walkway at Dangan Sportsground.
A spokesperson for NUIG said: “The University is aware of incidents of drug related activity on its lands at Dangan and it has been working very closely with the Garda Síochána to address the issue.
“Joint actions have been, and are being taken in line with the advice and procedures of the Gardaí.
“The University has also increased its security presence and regular patrols of the area are undertaken. The safety of students, staff and visitors to our open campus is of prime importance to the University.
“We are assured by the Gardaí that everything possible is being done to address the issue, with some successes already recorded, and the full support of the University has been provided to the Gardaí in their operations.
“Regarding drug paraphernalia, University security staff are fully trained in its safe removal to ensure that any evidence of drug use is removed from potential public exposure.
“The University urges any member of the public and campus community who witness such incidents to report them to the Garda Síochána immediately,” the spokesperson said.
