Liam Mellows still searching for win

LOUGHREA used up the full range of sporting emotions in capturing the Tom Callanan Cup in 2006 but it was more a workmanlike performance rather than a spectacular one which saw them capture their first points in this year’s title race when overcoming Liam Mellows at Clarinbridge on Saturday. The County champions are still somewhat short of their preferred starting fifteen, mainly as a result of injury to key players but this situation now seems to be abating with Johnny Maher and Nigel Shaughnessy both appearing as second half substitutes which, no doubt, augurs well for their remaining two group games.Mellows, on the other hand, enter their final group game against Clarinbridge needing a result in order to keep their interest in this year’s championship alive and while they were in contention right to the end, minus the services of David Collins due to an ongoing hamstring problem, Loughrea’s craft and experience took them over the line in what were trying conditions due to incessant rain at times.
