Galway victims are Done on Deal

People conned out of money by fraudsters purporting to have goods for sale on DoneDeal, make up the bulk of the 150 incidents of fraud recorded by Galway Gardaí so far this year.
Some 63 of the total 149 fraud cases (42%) reported in the city this year, related to ‘deception/other’.
Inspector Peter Conlon of Salthill Garda Station explained that this category of fraud relates to people who are conned into ‘buying’ non-existent match tickets, or concert tickets, or other goods such as second-hand cars, on ‘buy and sell’ websites such as DoneDeal. As well as online fraud, a small percentage of the category ‘deception’ related to ‘skimming’ of bank cards.
The incidents of fraud in the city were outlined by Superintendent Marie Skehill at the latest Galway City Joint Policing Committee. It is the first time fraud figures have been presented to the JPC.
After deception, the next most common incidents of fraud relate to counterfeiting of notes of coins – there were 18 such incidents, which made up 12% of the total.
Gardaí investigated five incidents of accommodation fraud in the city so far this year, which could include incidents whereby students were scammed out of their rental deposits, or tourists arrived to find there was no accommodation even though they’d paid a deposit.
