One of Galway's longest running free car parks ending

Drivers are being alerted that they will have to pay for parking once the new car park opens
One of Galway’s longest running car parks will end next year after the completion of its new development.
Drivers have been alerted that come the end of 2027, they will be charged for parking at Oranmore Train Station - currently being developed on the grounds of the existing car park on the Coast Road - which has been completely free to users up until now.
The new 300 space, multi-storey car park, being built as part of the new construction at the train station, is on track to be completed by the middle of next year with the train station’s second platform and underground pedestrian walkway set to be complete a few months later.
Oranmore Train Station will also benefit from the allocation of €24 million in government funding under the Towns and Cities Regeneration Investment Fund.
Part of the injection of cash will fund works within the Galway Metropolitan Area at Oranmore Train Station, including €800,000 for the planning and construction of an Eco Park within the Garraun Urban Framework Plan area, and €150,000 for the preliminary design of vehicular access points from the R446 into lands north of the railway line.
Earlier this year, Galway County Council revealed that it had hoped to proceed with construction of the Coast Road cycle and walkway in Oranmore also.
The confirmation was received by local TD and Minister for Education Hildegarde Naughton, who said the work would encompass the existing Coast Road between the mini roundabout at the top of Main Street, Oranmore, to the entrance at the Oranmore Train Station carpark.
“This cycle and walkway is a vital project with substantial works on the train station commencing this month,” she said.
“The project is a €13 million overhaul of the station infrastructure, which I ensured was funded, including a second platform and passing loop. It will substantially increase capacity at the station, and it is vital that people can walk and cycle to the redeveloped station in safety,” Minister Naughton added.
