He was described as being ‘one true kind, caring and helpful gentleman’

A local Galway gentleman has sadly died before he was able to see his milestone 100th birthday.

John 'Johnny' Hynes of Woodlawn in Ballinasloe was laid to rest over the weekend in his 100th year.

Johnny died peacefully at Mountbellew Nursing Home last Monday surrounded by his family.

People were able to pay their respects to Johnny on Friday September 11 at the Mortuary Room at St. Peter and Paul's Church in Ballymacward before he was buried on Saturday at Clonkeenkerrill Cemetery in Gurteen.

Johnny was much loved in the area with people paying tribute to the “gentleman” and remembering his days of attending Ballymac dances.

One said: “Deepest and sincere sympathy to Johnny's Nieces, Nephews, neighbours and friends on the sad passing of Johnny. Fond childhood memories of Johnny and his brothers passing over to their land in Faha and the delight to hear that Tommy and Benny would be coming on holiday. Johnny was one true kind, caring and helpful gentleman. May his gentle soul rest in eternal heavenly peace, in God's beautiful heavenly garden, with his four brothers, his parents, Maher and Kate and uncle Pat. Cherished memories.”

Another added: “Sincere sympathies to all of Johnny’s relations and friends on his passing. He was a gentleman. R.I.P. We worked with him on the Woodlawn postcard a few years ago. He gave us all the details about finding the spearhead in the bog in 1944. It was nice he got to see it again.”

A third said: “Sincere sympathy to the Hynes Family, his good friend Mary Gorman and his many friends on the death of Johnny. I remember Johnny and his brother Anthony cycling past our house in Corskeagh with lots of Brill Cream on their hair on the way to Ballymacward to a dance. May you rest in peace.”

His RIP.ie reads: “Predeceased by his parents James and Catherine, brothers Patrick, Anthony, Tommy, and Brendan and sister -in -law Anne.”

“Johnny will be sadly missed by his nephews and nieces; Kerril (MaryAnn), Kathy (Brian), Kenneth, and Deirdre; his grand- nieces and nephews and great grand-niece Elizabeth, cousins, extended family, neighbours and many friends.”
