Galway crime figures continue to fall

Galway’s crime figures have continued to fall for the first half of this year – with a decrease in burglaries, robberies and criminal damage as well as affray and violent disorder offences.

The one exception to this trend is in the area of fraud which has seen a major 73% national increase as compared to the first half of 2024.

Chief Supt Gerard Roche said that frauds, scams and online deceptions rose in the North-West Garda Region by 92% in the first half of this year.

“Some of that may be due to a change in reporting of such crimes by financial institutions with every scam, or attempted scam, now being reported to the Gardaí,” he said.

The first half of the year saw theft from shops across Galway city and county – mainly shoplifting – drop by 15% over the same period last year.
