It was only meant to be temporary but it is here to stay

Irish Rail has confirmed a new permanent train service for Galway after its temporary service proved to be such a success.

The weekday 6:50am service from Athenry to Galway was introduced in the short term in October last year but due to its huge popularity, it will become a regular morning fixture during the week going forward.

The operation was due to finish at the end of this month but Irish Rail and the National Transport Authority have approved its retention and confirmed it will also be part of the 2027 timetable too.

An Iarnród Éireann spokesman said “We are delighted to be in a position to continue operating the new service, which has provided improved options for commuters from Athenry and Oranmore and surrounding areas, following NTA approval.”

Following the successful completion of work on the curved glazed roof and the new Platform 5 in late 2025, April saw the new Platforms 3 and 4 now entering service.

It means that customers will now enter and exit on the southern side of the station and enjoy access to the new southern concourse including a new waiting room, new toilet facilities and use of the new ticket validators.

It also means that the northern side of the station and Platform 1 will now close for redevelopment works.

Works on Platform 2 continue and are expected to be complete over the coming months alongside the launch of an improved retail offering in the station.

This latest milestone equates to roughly half of the station footprint now reopened to the public, ensuring improved passenger experience and a more streamlined service for local rail users.
