Iarnród Éireann has confirmed the completion of a major phase in the redevelopment of Ceannt Station – with changes that will be obvious to commuters from this weekend.

Following successful completion of work on the curved glazed roof and the new Platform 5 in late 2025, this Saturday will see the new Platforms 3 and 4 now entering service alongside Platform 5.

That also means that customers will now enter and exit on the southern side of the station and enjoy access to the new southern concourse including a new waiting room, new toilet facilities and use of the new ticket validators.

It also means that the northern side of the station and Platform 1 will now close for redevelopment works.

Works on Platform 2 continue and are expected to be complete over the coming months alongside the launch of an improved retail offering in the station.

This latest milestone equates to roughly half of the station footprint now reopened to the public, ensuring improved passenger experience and a more streamlined service for local rail users.

Funded by the Department of Housing’s Urban Regeneration and Development Fund (URDF) and the National Transport Authority, the Ceannt Station redevelopment is delivering a modern, fully integrated and fully accessible transport hub in the heart of Galway.

Commencing in early 2024, the project remains on programme, with substantial completion targeted for August 2026.

Rail and bus services will continue to operate from the station for the duration of the works. The project is being delivered by BAM Ireland for Iarnród Éireann.

Customers are asked to note new platform boarding arrangements that will now be in place.

Ultimately, the investment will deliver more platforms for more capacity, increasing the number of platforms from two to five, supporting significantly expanded rail services well into the future.

It will also mean a new southern entrance and façade to Ceannt Station, creating an attractive modern station including new customer facilities, retail units and toilet facilities.

And it will boast enhanced connectivity and interchange between rail and bus services, making it easier and more attractive to customers to use multiple modes, and including improved accessibility and waiting areas, as well as Bus Éireann ticket office improvements.

There will be a new roof on the existing train hall to transform the platform and circulation areas into bright, welcoming spaces – and renovations to the existing northern elevation, prioritising accessibility and customer mobility through the entire station complex.

The project supports the sustainable growth and development envisaged for the city under Project Ireland 2040.

It also supports Galway City Council's strategic development goal of creating a public transport hub for the city at Ceannt station, as part of the Galway Transport Strategy.
