The death of Dan Fitzgerald, Lemonagh, Lavally, Tuam, and formerly of Rathfarnham, Dublin, on July 6 has brought an outpouring of tributes from his native Galway and from colleagues throughout the Irish fire service.

A proud son of Lavally, Dan never lost his deep affection for his Galway roots.

Although his working life was spent in Dublin, where he enjoyed a distinguished career with Dublin Fire Brigade, he remained closely connected to home, returning regularly to family and friends and following Galway GAA with characteristic enthusiasm.

Born in 1959, Dan joined Dublin Fire Brigade in 1989 and became one of Ireland's most respected fire safety professionals.

Rising to the position of Senior Executive Fire Prevention Officer, he played a leading role in promoting fire safety across the capital and became a trusted mentor to generations of Fire Prevention Officers.

His professionalism, integrity and willingness to share his knowledge earned him enormous respect throughout the service.

Following news of his passing, Dublin Fire Brigade led heartfelt tributes, remembering a colleague whose experience, wisdom and kindness touched countless lives.

Friends recalled his quick wit, generous nature and ability to put people at ease, while younger officers spoke of the encouragement and guidance he freely gave throughout their careers.

Behind the professional achievements was a devoted family man and loyal friend. Dan's love for his late wife, Patricia, whom he married shortly before her death in 2016 after more than 25 years together, remained a defining part of his life.

He often spoke of her with great affection, and family members recalled the deep bond they shared.

Those who knew Dan best remember not only his distinguished career but also his warmth, humility and enjoyment of life's simple pleasures.

Whether talking about Galway football, meeting old friends, or spending time with family, he possessed an easy-going manner that drew people to him.

His funeral in Galway on July 11 was attended by family, neighbours, friends and a large contingent of serving and retired members of Dublin Fire Brigade, with ceremonial honours reflecting the esteem in which he was held. It was a fitting farewell to a man whose life was marked by service, loyalty and friendship.

Predeceased by his wife Patricia, he is survived by his sisters Mary and Anne, brothers Tom, Jim and John, extended family, friends and his colleagues at Dublin Fire Brigade.

Dan Fitzgerald leaves behind a lasting legacy through the many colleagues he mentored, the communities made safer by his work, and the family and friends who will remember him with affection and gratitude.
