It’s the end of an era for one local Galway pub as a barman pulls his last pint there after over a decade.

Damien Ryan of Lowry’s Bar is hitting the road for Abu Dhabi after spending 11 years of his life helping to turn Lowry’s into the thriving bar you see today.

Lowry’s paid a glowing tribute to Damien saying that he took “enormous pride in what he did, setting very high standards and always looking for ways to make the pub that little bit better”.

The pub said: “After 11 years, this week we say goodbye to our manager, colleague and friend, Damien Ryan, as he and his wife head off to begin an exciting new chapter together in Abu Dhabi.

“Damien joined Lowry’s back in 2015 and has played a huge part in the place ever since.”

The bar continued, saying that Damien’s judgement was always trusted and that he was someone who led by example.

“His contribution over the past eleven years has been enormous”, they said.

“Just as important, Damien is simply a great fella. He’s one of those rare people who gets on with everyone.

“Customers, musicians, suppliers, staff and locals all took to him straight away, and anyone who has spent time in Lowry’s over the years will know exactly what we mean.”

“His good humour, decency and genuine interest in people helped create the atmosphere that so many people associate with the place today.”

Lowry’s said that they were naturally sad to see him go but could not be happier as he starts a new adventure with his wife.

But it’s also not a complete goodbye say the pub.

“Damien has kindly agreed to keep helping us behind the scenes from time to time, particularly with some of our social media, so you’ll still see him popping up every now and again.”

Connemara Blue presented Damien with a bespoke gift to mark his departure and their lovely gesture came at no cost as they wanted to give it to him out of the goodness of their heart.

The pub added: “They quietly refused to take any payment. It was a lovely gesture and says an awful lot about the regard in which Damien is held, not just by us, but by the wider community.

“Thanks for everything, Damo. We wish you and your wife nothing but happiness and success in Abu Dhabi. Enjoy every minute of it—you’ve earned it.”
