Injury-time goal denies Galway FC deserved win

The line uttered by John Cleese in his commentary in the Monty Python sketch The Silly Olympiad is probably the best to sum up Saturday night at City Calling Stadium, and maybe even Galway FC’s season to-date: “it’s enough to make you chew your own foot off”.

Tommy Dunne’s side were leading 2-1 as Saturday’s game entered the second minute of injury time when they conceded a stupid free-kick just inside the Longford Town half. Goalkeeper Chris Bennion launched the ball into the Galway FC penalty area, the visitors couldn’t clear their lines, and Longford captain Stephen Rice stole in to force the ball home for the equaliser.

They had fallen behind in the 13th minute completely against the run of play when David O’Sullivan turned the ball home from close range, but they were back on level terms within five minutes as Stephen Walsh picked out Jason Molloy in the box to volley home.

They were the better side throughout, and took the lead with nine minutes to go when Ryan Manning cut in from the left and curled a shot past Bennion from the tightest of angles.

However the home side equalised two minutes into injury time when Stephen Rice forced the ball home following a goalmouth scramble.

The draw leaves Tommy Dunne’s side fifth in the table on 10 points, but there are just four points separating Wexford Youths in second place (13 points) and Shamrock Rovers B in seventh (9 points). Galway FC host Waterford United in Eamonn Deacy Park this Friday (7.45pm).
