Galway footballers to face resurgent Armagh in All-Ireland quarter final
IT could have been Cork or Clare, but Galway footballers instead drew the short straw in the RTE Radio studios on Monday morning.
The Tribesmen were first of the provincial champions out of the hat in the All-Ireland quarter finals draw, but that didn’t save them from being pitched against potentially the toughest opponents of all.
Padraic Joyce’s charges will be squaring up to a resurgent Armagh at Croke Park on Sunday week (1.45pm) in the first part of a double bill which will also see their great Connacht rivals Mayo take on Kerry (4pm).
Compared to taking on Cork or Clare, it’s a far more daunting prospect as Armagh will enter the fixture in confident mood after already ending the All-Ireland hopes of reigning champions Tyrone and Donegal.
That comprehensive victory over Donegal (3-17 to 0-15) in Clones last Sunday saw Armagh turn the tables on Declan Bonnar’s team after a disappointing loss to them in the Ulster championship.
With Rian O’Neill rediscovering his best form, his converted penalty, and goals from Rory Grugan – inside 12 seconds – and midfielder Stephen Sheridan, saw Armagh end up convincing winners on a day wing-back Jarlath Óg Burns stormed forward to land three points from play.
Kieran McGeeney’s troops will provide a stern test for Galway, especially at a venue where they took down Dublin in the opening round of this year’s National League in January (2-15 to 1-13).
