COROFIN completed a 100% record in this year’s Galway senior football championship group phase with a resounding 18-point victory over Naomh Anna Leitir Mor in Spiddal on Sunday last.

A haul of 2-2 from Martin Farragher, as well as a brace of goals from Liam Silke and a Kevin Murphy green flag accounted for the bulk of the defending champions’ scores, as they extended their seven year championship undefeated streak to 41 games with a performance of overwhelming attacking prowess.

The Kevin O’Brien coached Corofin now enter to knockout stages having scored a huge aggregate total of 15-73 in their five games.

Leitir Mor, whose fate – a relegation play off – was sealed before the game, played with admirable pride, despite the game being rendered a dead rubber, but there was an evident gulf in class between the two sides.

The Connemara side started the match brightly and Iarla O Currain, their most potent attacking outlet, notched the opening score with a well taken point from distance. However, this would be the last time that Maitias Bairead’s team would hold a lead as Corofin soon settled into their usual stride and they made it count on the scoreboard.

The dominance of Corofin from Leitir Mor kick-outs, with Kieran Molloy and the midfield duo of Conor Cunningham and Ronan Steede aerially dominant, meant that the Gaeltacht side were hemmed into their own half with any of their attempted outballs snuffed out at source.

With near-total territorial and ball possession ascendancy, Corofin soon opened their scoring account with a goal of trademark precision and flair. Molloy, so often the provider of attacking impetus from deeper positions, started a move that was ended by Farragher, who with a piece of soccer skill that would not look out of place in this week’s Euro 2020 qualifiers, volleyed home a goal from an acute angle.

Cunningham and Michael Lundy soon added a point apiece as the 20-times senior champions began to go through the gears, with Leitir Mor powerless to resist.
