TICKETS for next month’s EA Sports Cup final at Eamonn Deacy Park between Galway United and St Patrick’s Athletic will go on sale at the ground tonight (Friday) when United host Dundalk in the FAI Cup.

St Patrick’s Athletic have requested 800 tickets from the FAI for the game on Saturday, September 19 (6.05pm), which means that 3,500 will go on sale to United fans, with priority being given to season ticket holders, after which tickets will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis.

While Eamonn Deacy Park will stage the game, the event is actually being hosted by the FAI as it is a domestic final, and as a result, United season tickets will not apply. It is also the FAI which sets the ticket price: adult tickets for the game will cost €15; the price for the unwaged and pensioners is €10; while children under the age of 12 will be charged €5.

The new chairman of Galway United, Jonathan Corbett, is calling on all sports fans in Galway to get behind United in what will be the club’s first appearance in a domestic final in 18 years, when they won the same competition with a 4-2 aggregate win over Cork City.

“We really hope it will be a sell-out, and it should be a great atmosphere for our first final since 1997. Getting to a final has been a great reward for the efforts of the lads this season on our return to the Premier Division, and to cap it by claiming the trophy would be magnificent,” said Corbett.

The businessman has taken over as Chairman of United from Bernie O’Connell, who was appointed by the FAI to guide the four different strands of the game locally – the Galway FA, the Galway United Supporters Trust, Mervue United and Salthill Devon – to reform United after a two year absence from the league.

“Bernie, who is now the honorary president of the club, has made the changeover very smooth and his advice has been spot on. It was an honour to be asked to be chairman – I have been a United supporter all my life, and I’d like to thank Nicola Deacy for nominating me, and my wife Emma for her support. I’d like to think that I am a positive person and I'm looking to bring by business background to this job.

“I have some ideas that will take time that I hope will get more bums on seats at Eamonn Deacy Park and if there is one goal I would have and that would be to enhance the match day experience when people come to the match,” he said.
