UHG defers surgeries as overcrowding continues
Galway Bay fm newsroom - Most elective surgery has been postponed at University Hospital Galway due to increased pressure on the Emergency Department.
The HSE says the pressure is as a result of patients waiting for admission and the low number of patients expected to be discharged.
UHG has now deferred most elective surgery, is speeding up diagnostic tests in the A&E and has opened all available beds.
Convalescent beds are also being purchased on a daily basis at private nursing homes to facilitate the discharge of patients from the hospital.
The HSE says much of the increase at the Emergency Department is as a result of people suffering with flu and other seasonal illnesses.
