It is something that both parents and teachers have sought after for quite some time according to the school

The new pedestrian crossing and ramp at Scoil na bhForbacha (Furbo Primary School), on which work has now commenced, is a very welcome development in terms of the safety of the many pupils, parents and teachers there, according to Orla Nugent of Aontú.

‘There has been a growing volume of traffic on this road for many years now and that, combined with speeding at some times, means the pedestrian ramp and crossing is necessary, and has been much sought after by parents at the school. Fáiltím roimh an dul chun cinn seo,’ commented Orla.

The work at Furbo also involves the upgrading of some nearby road junctions to help mobility and safety. As a teacher herself Orla says she hopes that plans for similar pedestrian crossings in Barna and Spiddal are also prioritised as matters of great public safety.

Aontú has also welcomed the provision of extra buses between Barna and Galway, with these buses leaving Ceannt Station at 7am and 8.30am, Barna at 7.45am and 9am, afternoons leaving Ceannt Station at 4.15pm and Barna at 4.45pm.

However, Aontú added that it’s a great pity those new services were not extended further West than Barna, and particularly to Furbo which would clearly be an easy new addition to the new Barna route.

The fact that people have often been left on the roadside on this overall route is acknowledged. Some effort towards this has been made with the provision of a new bus leaving An Cheathrú Rua at 4.45pm and one leaving Ceannt Station for an Cheathrú Rua at the same time.

Also, with a new service leaving Spiddal at 8.10am reaching Ceannt Station at 9.08am. However, more needs to be done to ensure people in this area can avail with ease of the much-funded public service.
