There is speculation over the possibility that Ulster Bank branches in Galway may be closed this year.

In a statement this afternoon, the bank says it will close in the region of 20 branches and sub offices across Ireland in 2013.

The bank does not give the locations for closures but adds it will provide further details to customers and employees within the coming weeeks.

According to the Ulster Bank website, there are at least 8 branches across Galway including Eyre Square in the city, Briarhill, Athenry, Tuam and Loughrea.

The closures are part of the Bank's review of the service it provides here.

Last year, Ulster Bank said it would be seeking 950 redundancies from its staff in Ireland.
