Salthill Devon hit for six

The harsh lessons keep on coming for Salthill Devon, who suffered their heaviest defeat of their debut season in the League of Ireland when Monaghan United put six past them in Drom on Saturday night.
Hopes were high that the home side would pick up at least a point from the game against a Monaghan side that started the season with just one win in five games, but those hopes were dashed early on as the visitors scored twice in the space of a minute to take total control of the game.
Sean Brennan was Devon’s tormentor in chief, grabbing a hat-trick, while his strike partner Karl Bermingham grabbed a brace as Monaghan eased to victory and leave Salthill firmly rooted to the bottom of the table.
Brennan opened the scoring in the 11th minute when firing a freekick past Ronan Burke in the Devon goal, and he added a second within a minute as Devon lost possession from the kick-off, Brennan finding the net again to give the visitors a dream start.
The game was effectively ended as a contest on the half hour mark when Barry Clancy added Monaghan’s third, but the visitors kept pushing and Brennan completed his hat-trick in the 52nd minute, getting on the end of Cathal O’Connor’s cross to claim the match ball.
Bermingham fired home from the penalty spot in the 66th minute, and while Mikey Gilmore raised a brief cheer for the home side with only their second goal in the League, it was Monaghan who had the final say, Bermingham adding his second in the 87th minute to seal Monaghan’s biggest-ever away win in the League.
