Major Galway company plan to demolish €2 million building for student accommodation

A major Galway company plan to demolish a €2 million building to make way for student accommodation.
Planning permission is set to be sought for the new student housing development, which may tower up to eight-storeys high over Georgian Limerick.
Some 350 student beds are proposed for the scheme, which is earmarked for a site between Lady’s Lane and Hunt’s Lane, off Dominic Street in the city centre.
Real estate firm Lanehunt has held meetings with Limerick City and County Council over the multi-million euro development.
Now, the Galway-based company has indicated it plans to formally apply for planning permission for the scheme.
According to a planning notice, part of the existing Tait Centre - which was on the market for €1.9m - will be demolished.
In its place, a single multi-use block ranging in height from six to eight storeys is planned.
The 350 bed spaces will be arranged across 51 apartments, with shared kitchens and living rooms.
It’s envisaged there will be an internal floor area of 9,314 square metres, the application goes on to state.
A variety of shared facilities are to be provided, including a cafe, gym, cinema, study rooms and a laundry.
Outside college term-time, Lanehunt is also seeking permission to use the accommodation for short stays by members of the general public.
No car parking spaces will be provided.
Following the advertisement of the planning notice, the developer has a fortnight to furnish Limerick City and County Council with documents.
