All 16 residents at Toghermore Mental Health Residential Unit in Tuam will be moved from the facility to alternative accommodation on a phased basis by mid January.
It follow's an independent Fire and Safety report at the 18 bed facility which was undertaken in September and delivered to the HSE last week.
It shows shortfalls in relation to fire safety that are to be addressed with immediate effect.
A local steering group has been established to address the issues and no other mental health services are affected in the Toghermore complex.
8 places have now been identified for affected residents while the remainder will be transferred based on clinical and geographical needs.
Catherine Cunningham, Area Manager for Galway Roscommon Primary Community & Continuing Care told Galway Talks that fire watches have been ramped up as an interim measure as this process continues
