PRAVEEN SAYS HE FORGIVES MIDWIFE'S COMMENTS

Day four of the inquest into the death of Savita Halappanavar has now resumed at Galway courthouse.

Yesterday many witness statements were heard including that of Clinical Midwife Manager Ann Maria Burke who confirmed that she had made reference to Ireland being a Catholic country in discussions with Savita regarding termination.

She told the Coroner Dr. Ciaran MacLoughlin ‘I’m very upset about this. I did mention Catholic country. I didn’t mean it in a hurtful context’.

Today speaking on his way into the courthouse, he told media that he forgives midwife manager Ann Maria Burke for her comments.

However he has maintained his stance that Dr. Katherine Astbury made similar comments when in discussions with him.

When questioned on the comments yesterday Dr Astbury said she made NO such mention of religion but said she cannot terminate in Ireland because the foetus is still alive.

She stressed it was something she ‘certainly would not say’.

Speaking outside the courthouse this morning, Praveen said he forgave midwife Ann Maria Burke following her testimony yesterday.

Speaking outside court, Praveen’s legal representative also said that any plans to meet the HSE investigation chairperson are now likely to take place after the conclusion of the inquest.
