Loughrea native Ultan Conlon plays the city’s Crane Bar on Thursday, December 23. Ultan is a popular voice on the Irish music circuit and in 2009 he released his debut album, Bless Your Heart . The debut was critically acclaimed by Hot Press magazine and described as ‘the most impressive Irish debut since Damien Rice’s O’ by The Evening Herald.
Ultan has played at various festivals including Electric Picnic, the Body & Soul festival, Bundoran’s Seasessions and The Hebcelt Festival alongside Imelda May in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis. Last summer saw Ultan take in most of Scotland and the north of England on tour.
He has supported numerous artists including the late John Martyn, Richard Hawley, Lisa Hannigan, Hermione Hennessy, Mark Geary, Roesy, and David Kitt.
Indeed, John Martyn liked his songs so much he sang on Ultan's beautiful track, Really Gone, which was to be Martyn's final release before his death in February 2009.
“As a boy I had my face glued to the local guitar shop window and at the age of 11 my father bought me my first electric guitar!” recalls Ultan. “I always dreamt of being a musician and I am very grateful that I now have this wonderful vocation.”
For his gig in The Crane, Ultan will be joined by a full band. Always impressive in concert, Conlon’s show will be a good way to herald in the festive season. Doors 9pm, tickets €10.
