Peter Feeney elected Chair of Athenry Oranmore Municipal District

Galway Bay fm newsroom – Fine Gael Cllr Peter Feeney has been elected as the Cathaoirleach of the new Municipal District of Athenry/Oranmore. The group held its first brief meeting in County Hall on Prospect Hill today where there was almost full attendance, with the exception of Sinn Fein newcomer Cllr Gabe Cronnelly. Fianna Fail Cllr Martina Kinnane was elected as Leas-Cathaoirleach or Deputy Chairperson after being proposed for the position by Cllr Frank Kearney. The group will hold its next meeting on July 15th at County Hall and meetings are to be held bi-monthly thereafter. It was agreed to hold such meetings in County Hall with a possibility of holding one a year at a location in the district. Commenting on that decision, Cllr Malachy Noone said the work that is done is more important than ‘where' it is done. Speaking following his election as Chairperson Peter Feeney said he felt Athenry/Oranmore was the most important district in the west and will serve as the region's economic engine. The new Cathaoirleach also said it was an historic day that gives members a lot of responsibility and power which must be used wisely.
