No broadband beside Church’s bell

The notion of old meeting new didn’t sit well with county planners who refused permission for the installation of broadband on the bell tower of a mid-19th century Clifden church.
Galway County Council ruled that the provision of six antenna and two dishes at Christ Church on the town’s Church Hill would detract from the visual setting and integrity of the Church of Ireland place of worship.
Planners stated that the Clifden Local Area Plan seeks to protect as well as ensure that any development respects the character of existing historic buildings and to grant permission would interfere with the character of this protected structure.
It would detract from the visual amenity of the area, would militate against the preservation of the setting of the protected structure and would set an undesirable precedent for future similar developments in the area.
The existing Christ Church – built in two stages from 1853 to 1864 – replaced an earlier church on the same site dating from 1810.
