Net subsidies accounted for 80 percent of agricultural income in the West last year.
That's according to new figures compiled by the Central Statistics Office detailing regional accounts for agriculture.
The study records 298 million euro in net subsidies for the Western region in 2012.
This is from an operating surplus of 370 million euro.
Nationally, net subsidies accounted for over 73 percent of agricultural income.
The data also shows that 61 percent of national cattle output was produced in the Southern and Eastern regions.
For milk output, over 80 percent came from the Southern and Eastern region.
Just under 55 percent of sheep and close to 48 percent of pig output came from the Border, Midland and Western region.
