Man accused of having guns and ammunition

A city man allegedly found with various firearms and ammunition in his Mervue home two years ago, was sent forward for trial when he appeared before Galway District Court.

The Book of Evidence was served on James McCarthy (25), of 14 Barry Avenue, and Inspector Michael Coppinger advised Judge Dennis McLoughlin that the DPP had consented to the accused being returned for trial to the current sittings of Galway Circuit Criminal Court.

McCarthy faces a total of five charges under the Firearms Act 1964, specifically for possessing .22 long rifles, Beretta model 71 semi-automatic pistols; having 31 rounds of .22LR calibre Sellier and Bellot-make ammunition; and two counts of having rounds of NATO calibre Israel Military Industries-make ammunition.
