LIVE: Garda statement as video shows traffic pile up after Galway motorway incident

Drivers are being warned to avoid the motorway if at all possible as three ambulances and two garda squad cars attend the scene

A stretch of a Galway motorway road has reopened as emergency services still deal with an ongoing incident.

Long lines of traffic is starting to build up on the M6 following what is understood to be a single vehicle collision.

It’s understood that three ambulances and two garda squad cars are at the scene but Galway Live understands that nobody has been seriously injured.

The road still remains slightly closed off westbound between the Galway Plaza and the toll in Loughrea with drivers being warned to avoid if possible.

A garda spokesman told Galway Live: “Gardaí and emergency services attended a road traffic collision that occurred near Ballinasloe, Co. Galway today Monday 2nd November 2026 shortly before 6:40am. The road is open to traffic.”

We’ll have the very latest in our live blog below.

Elsewhere, one person has been airlifted to University Hospital Galway after a very serious accident over the weekend.

The incident happened in the small rural village of Drimghlea in the area of Ballyconneely on Saturday evening just after 4pm.

A source told Galway Live: “There was a very bad accident there on Saturday evening. It was a two car collision and the helicopter had to come out to bring one of the people to the hospital.”
