Livelier Galway cut loose

Let’s not fool ourselves that this was the 'real deal’. Anyone can look good at 'chucking out’ time in a club . . . and any team would have looked good against a 14-man Antrim side for three-quarters of this game. The Ulster men conceded 1- 17 without reply at one stage in the second half and managed a grand total of a goal and a point from play over the 70 minutes. So much for their pre-match claims that Galway didn’t give them the respect they deserved. The men in maroon showed the kind of ruthless streak up front which was so badly lacking in Ennis a week earlier, but nobody should expect that the Galway forwards will be afforded the same time or space against Kilkenny in this weekend’s All- Ireland quarter-final.For a while it looked as though a shock was on the cards, as the visitors — who had the backing of the breeze — deservedly led by 1-4 to 0-1 at the end of the first quarter. But indiscipline cost the Antrim men dearly, as goalscoring hero Kieran Kelly turned villain when he was red carded for a wild pull on full-back Ger Mahon 25 minutes into the game. After that, there was only going to be one outcome.
