House evacuations and 24 roads closed in South Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Army has been tasked to assist in the evacuation of a number of families from their flooded homes in the Skehanagh area of Ardrahan.

The evacuation effort concerns five families in three locations where flood waters are now up to 500 millimetres in depth, with some fast flowing in places.

The Army was tasked at lunchtime today and will assist with four wheel drives and other high axil vehicles.

Residents concerned include elderly people and a 12 week old baby.

Meanwhile, speaking at a special meeting in County Hall today, Councillor Peter Feeney said the council needs a comprehensive plan to deal with flooding.

The recent heavy rain has caused widespread devastation across the county, particularly in parts of South Galway where thousands of acres of land are under water.

Councillor Bridie Willers was not at today's meeting and is one of those who may be forced to leave her Ardrahan home due to flooding.

24 local roads have been closed in South Galway due to flooding.

These include Caherpeak, Drumminalough and Loughaunawadda to Skehanagh.

Further details of all closures are on the county council website.
