Gardai responded to an alleged incident of a sexual nature at a popular Galway beach over the weekend.
Salthill gardai carried out patrols of Silverstrand beach on Sunday after it was reported that a gang of men had been making sexual gestures and comments to users of the beach.
It is understood that women and kids were at the beach at the time when the group of as many as eight men were alleged to have been carrying out the act.
An eyewitness told Galway Live: “I was walking along a more remote part of Silverstrand when I noticed a group of eight men staring at me.
“I found it odd but said hello and then tried to find out more from a distance. They weren’t from Galway and when I asked them why they were in that particular secluded spot, they sniggered and said they are here ‘looking for some sex and whatever they could get’.
“I found this shocking. Talking to people at the beach after, plenty viewed their vulgar comments as intent to commit sexual offenses which is worrying.”
The eyewitness reported the offence to Salthill gardai who carried out patrols afterwards but found no offences being made.
