Galway residents told 'do not engage with this man' and ring gardai immediately if spotted

A Galway councillor is warning residents to ring gardai immediately if they spot unregistered house calls from people asking to carry out works.
It comes after several reports of one man doing the rounds to households around Headford and demanding deposits up front for work that he claims needs to be done urgently.
Councillor for the Tuam district area Andrew Reddington said that this particular man was targeting the elderly especially warning not to engage with him and to call gardai immediately if he’s spotted again.
Councillor Reddington warned: “Man going around Headford calling to houses, telling people there is moss on their roof, and saying they will clean it - but only after taking a deposit for the materials first.
“Please tell your neighbours, especially the elderly, not to engage with him and to ring Tuam Garda Station on 093-70840 with his reg. He is driving a white van.”
It comes after a warning by gardai calling on people living in the country to ‘lock up and light up’ after a spate of attempted burglaries as the mornings and evenings get darker.
The appeal was made by Garda Sarah O’Sullivan during guest appearances across radio stations in Ireland on Wednesday.
Garda O’Sullivan explained that gardaí run the notice ever year, and pointed out that the nights are set to become longer in the autumn and winter months.
Given this fact, she released some crime prevention pointers for people to follow as the darker months approach:
- Secure all doors and windows, even while you are at home and during daylight hours
- Turn on indoor lights or use timers, so that ‘your house looks lived-in’
- Set your home’s security alarm every time you leave or go asleep
- Hide any car keys and house keys every from windows and letterboxes
- Do not keep any large amounts of cash and / or expensive jewellery at home
