Galway students shine at making movies
A host of budding filmmakers made their mark at the Galway regional finals of Ireland’s Young Filmmaker of the Year 2019 – with their fresh take on the world of cinema.
The competition, which received a record of over 1,700 entries this year, announced which short films would move on to the finals at the Galway regional heats, which took place in the Town Hall Theatre last week.
Films by young filmmakers from the United States and the Netherlands were also screened as part of Fresh Film Festival’s International category.
Films screened at the Galway regional heats included films from Longford, Monaghan, Roscommon, Mayo, and Galway.
And Galway entries to make it through included ‘Lurker in the Woods’ by Jonathan Connolly, 18; ‘True Kill’ by Matilda Wing, 16, and her school Coláste Bhaile Chláir in Galway, and ‘A Bridge Too Far’ by Ruairi O’Gorman and Katie Ryan, both 16.
Audience Awards were announced following each regional screening, with the winners of the Galway Heat announced as Jack McKenna and Billy Clarke, both 17 and students from Coláiste Bhaile Chláir from Galway, who won for their film called ‘Ron Gone!'
The eighties-inspired film follows a principal who starts to create havoc in the school – and Jack described the win as ‘a really cool achievement; we're glad everyone enjoyed it!’
