Galway motor tax offices to close on Wednesday due to backlog

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Motor tax offices in the city and in Ballinasloe are to close on Wednesday to process a backlog of applications.

It comes as new rules introduced this month mean anyone who wants to declare a vehicle off the road, must do so in advance of the period of non-usage.

Previously, if a car was off the road, the owner had to fill out a form and bring it to a garda station and get it stamped and therefore would not be liable for motor tax arrears.

The move led to long queues at both offices at the end of September and some three thousand declarations of non-use now have to be processed.

Director of Finance with Galway County Council, Ger Mullarkey says the tax arrears backlog has now been cleared but non-use declarations must now be tackled.
