Both Galway and Ballinasloe have lost their litter free status.

In the 2009 litter survey of 60 towns and cities by Irish Business Against Litter, Galway was described as 'moderately littered' in 45th position.

It also lost its crown as Ireland's cleanest city while Ballinasloe was described as 'seriously littered' in 54th spot - a few places shy of the 'litter blackspots.'

Two-thirds of the towns surveyed are now classed as 'litter-free'

However, the lack of progress in certain areas has forced IBAL to call for an overhaul of litter laws on local businesses.
