Two Galway libraries are this month playing host of a unique exhibition entitled the Cost of Breathing – offering a personal insight into the reality of life with Cystic Fibrosis.

Trevor O’Donoghue’s work – hosted by Cystic Fibrosis Ireland – is on show in Galway's Westside Library until March 8 and Ballinasloe Library from March 12 to 20.

The exhibition aims to highlight the societal and economic challenges that many people living with CF face, despite advancements in recent years.

Research conducted by CFI in 2025 found that 44.9% of people with CF struggled to meet their monthly bills; 28.1% are unable to work due to their CF; 30.3% of those in full time employment experience enforced deprivation – and 63.8% receive Disability Allowance experience enforced deprivation.

Trevor is a photographer based in Killarney who was diagnosed CF. He became involved in the project to strengthen awareness of the realities of living with the condition, which is sometimes referred to as a hidden disability/illness.

In 2019, Trevor and his fiancée Ciara created photographic therapy called Mindography which later became Radharc.

This grew into global photo challenges and workshops during the pandemic, connecting thousands of people across more than 60 countries.

In addition to the physical exhibition, the virtual gallery was launched online and is available at https://www.cfireland.ie/support-resources/members-events/the-cost-of-breathing.
